Onslaught of phishing scams as year ends

It is during the holiday season that the well-known phishing scammers proliferate.

Consumers let down their guard during the holidays, as they make active and increased use of their financial means, including bank accounts and credit cards.

Having received three dozen such emails in the past 48 hours, I can only say this: don’t open or click on emails that allege to originate at your bank or credit union.

Heck, even if the sender appears to be your mom, call her on the phone instead; many phishing attacks begin when one’s list of contacts gets compromised.

The solution is obvious: visit your accounts directly, by typing – carefully so – the URL in the browser. Make sure you have antivirus installed, and patch/update your operating system regularly.

Happy holidays, keep your spending low and your accounts safe.
