Where you list your domain might determine its inquiry volume

I had an interesting discussion with an experienced domain investor the other day; among the things we talked about, was domain sales venues.

He’s mostly a seller, so his buying habits are instinctive. One of the observations he made, was that when a domain name is listed for sale on Domain Name Sales, he rarely inquires about it.

His rationale: DNS is mostly used by domain investors and resellers, and therefore their asking prices are considerably higher than domains listed on other venues.

Recently, Sedo stated that their median domain sale price is $580 dollars.

The GoDaddy marketplace is by far the “cheapest” when it comes to buying domain names. Afternic attracts many portfolios that are brokered, and thus pricing is higher to include the broker’s commission.

Flippa offers a wide range of options, and sellers are basing their numbers on a variety of active metrics, such as traffic and revenue.

In all, it appears that where one lists their domain name for sale does make a difference to the educated buyer.

Being aware of a seller’s expectations of price is not necessarily a bad thing, as it cuts down on the ‘white noise’ associated with lowball offers. Personally, I simply delete offers that are outlandishly low.

Domain investors want to maximize their money’s worth, and naturally observe the pricing structure of most active domain selling venues. As a buyer, an obvious solution is to contact the seller directly from their WHOIS info; while this approach is not necessarily better, it’s an alternative.

As with everything else in life, variety of options is a must.

  1. Like you said listing on dns cuts out the white noise. Its the best most professional system I have used so far. I would like to be able to customize the landers for each name but other than that it rocks. I don’t think anyone that lists on dns is looking for a $580 sale.

  2. Steve – Agree on both items. The lack of lander customization has to do with Google restrictions, as far as I know.

  3. Acro,
I just want to customize the lander pages that don’t show ads. Many of my better names I keep off ppc because of potential tm ads that may show up. There is no $ in ppc so a customizable lander with no ads would be perfect. You could put up some stats of similar sales, business ideas, custom pics etc.

Agree, they should offer the ability to choose one or even more beautiful images to show in full screen mode as landing page, the same offered by Voodoo, but with a large image (or 3, 4 sliding images) , not that little image at the top of the landing pages of domains parked at Voodoo.
