{"id":1733,"date":"2011-07-04T17:32:41","date_gmt":"2011-07-04T21:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=1733"},"modified":"2011-07-04T18:29:23","modified_gmt":"2011-07-04T22:29:23","slug":"a-fistful-of-godaddy-dollars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/a-fistful-of-godaddy-dollars\/","title":{"rendered":"A fistful of GoDaddy dollars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It finally happened: the legendary Bob Parsons will no longer be in charge of the company he founded, <a href=\"http:\/\/GoDaddy.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GoDaddy.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not many seem to like GoDaddy for <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/how-godaddy-annoyed-me-for-30-days\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>practices of the past<\/strong><\/a>. And yet, the biggest domain registrar in the world with 40 million domains seems to have found the Holy Grail of domaining: controversy.<\/p>\n<p>When it wasn&#8217;t about the buxom GoDaddy Girls that had &#8220;wardrobe malfunctions&#8221; in Super Bowl commercials, Bob himself would make sure the attention drawn to his persona and GoDaddy remained constant.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal of Bob Parsons taking aim at and killing an elephant in Africa only temporarily hurt the GoDaddy image, primarily after PETA &#8211; <em>an association that holds its own record of controversial marketing<\/em> &#8211; complained about the incident.<\/p>\n<p>I can understand Mike&#8217;s sentiments over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.domainconsultant.com\/?p=2964\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>DomainConsultant<\/strong><\/a>. It&#8217;s not easy to swallow a bigger than life icon and his assorted antics. The fact is, that Bob Parsons stood up during rough times by utilizing a shrewd amount of innovation, timed marketing and &#8211; why not &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/how-i-saved-godaddy-in-2001\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>pure luck.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The end result of all these years of Bob Parsons&#8217; personal involvement with the domain industry is of course pay day. The $2.25 billion sale of GoDaddy &#8211; <em>half of which is incurred debt<\/em> &#8211; signifies that aiming large is the way to success.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the all-American, capitalist way.
