{"id":2237,"date":"2012-03-02T11:26:46","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T16:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=2237"},"modified":"2012-03-02T11:28:05","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T16:28:05","slug":"its-tax-season-and-phishing-attempts-are-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/its-tax-season-and-phishing-attempts-are-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s tax season and phishing attempts are on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s tax season in the US and in several other countries and phishing scams are on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Preying on unsuspected email recipients, the phishing scammers&#8217; email subjects include the names of a variety of tax or accounting-related software, such as Turbo Tax, Intuit etc.<\/p>\n<p>These emails ask the recipient to update their account, software or profiles with the respective companies.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons the software companies are being used in this manner are simple:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Volume: Recipients stand a good chance to be actual users of the software.<\/li>\n<li>Timing: Tax season, an important time during the year for one&#8217;s business or personal accounting.<\/li>\n<li>Confusion: The software companies themselves send out a number of legitimate emails; the phishing emails thus capitalize on the element of confusion.<\/li>\n<li>Attachments: Some phishing emails aren&#8217;t just links to gateways that look like their legitimate counterparts; they also bear viruses, trojans or other malware.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>When you receive ANY email asking you to log into an account of ANY sort, do not do so.<\/strong><\/span> <strong>I cannot stress this enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Simply type in the URL of the web site that you have an account with, and log in securely.
