{"id":2307,"date":"2012-04-23T15:16:30","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T19:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=2307"},"modified":"2012-04-23T15:25:26","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T19:25:26","slug":"sinclair-zx-spectrum-it-all-began-30-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/sinclair-zx-spectrum-it-all-began-30-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinclair ZX Spectrum: It all began 30 years ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An old friend turned 30 years old today, and while he has no home anymore, he carries within some of my early computing memories.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ZX_Spectrum\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sinclair ZX Spectrum<\/strong><\/a>, with its 48 kb RAM, 16 colors, 256 x 192 pixel display and monophonic sound, was officially launched on April 23, 1982.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of friends bought one during that time, and mine was acquired on Christmas eve of 1985. The 8-bit ZX Spectrum sported a &#8220;<em>chicklet<\/em>&#8221; keyboard and an expansion port. One had to connect it to a television as a display, and software loaded from audio tape; a tape recorder was not included.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, somehow, through that early introduction to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BASIC\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>BASIC<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; <em>the primary programming language of the ZX Spectrum<\/em> &#8211; a generation of youth around the world, experienced their first steps on an <strong>affordable computer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t all about programming and education; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldofspectrum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>computer games<\/strong><\/a> were the driving force and soon enough, software houses in the UK, Europe and in the Americas churned out software coded in <a href=\"http:\/\/zilog.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Zilog Z80<\/strong><\/a> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zilog_Z80#Z80_assembly_language\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>machine code<\/strong><\/a>&#8220;. The Zilog CPU was clocked at 3.5 Mhz, a <strong>tiny nano-midget<\/strong> compared to today&#8217;s Intel monster CPU clocks of 1,000 times more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uncle&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clive_Sinclair\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Clive Sinclair<\/strong><\/a>, the progressive British entrepreneur behind Sinclair Research, was knighted eventually by Queen Elizabeth of England. His contribution to spreading affordable computing to thousands turned him into a legend; thousands of kids, teenagers and adults alike aspired to become programmers and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Having produced a published series of software games and applications in the late 80&#8217;s and very early 90&#8217;s, I&#8217;m grateful that ZX Spectrum ever existed, as it carved a path for me, my career and that of thousands of others &#8211; back in the day that the Internet was pure science fiction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-17776666\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Happy 30th birthday, Speccy!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An old friend turned 30 years old today, and while he has no home anymore, he carries within some of my early computing memories.
