{"id":3584,"date":"2013-12-09T12:53:56","date_gmt":"2013-12-09T17:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=3584"},"modified":"2013-12-09T12:55:32","modified_gmt":"2013-12-09T17:55:32","slug":"dirty-domain-tricks-or-guerrilla-marketing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/dirty-domain-tricks-or-guerrilla-marketing\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Dirty&#8221; domain tricks or guerrilla marketing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.VinsDomains.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vincent<\/strong><\/a> broke the news of a Facebook ad by Minds+Machines <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VinsDomainscom\/status\/409839065127608320\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>on Twitter<\/strong><\/a>, the resulting reaction was 100% as expected.<\/p>\n<p>The ad itself was a quick attempt at being provocative, because no-one in their right mind would believe that the .com name space is truly dead.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is this <a title=\"Fear of a .Brand Planet\" href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/fear-of-a-brand-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>underlying fear<\/strong><\/a> among the folks who simply refuse to experience the change of the domain name space, that triggers a reaction to even obvious &#8220;<em>trolling<\/em>&#8221; ads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Such ads have been used for years<\/strong> by every phone company on the planet, targeting competitors: Verizon does it against AT&amp;T, T-Mobile does it against Verizon, Sprint does it against T-Mobile.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is all non-news<\/strong> to me.<\/p>\n<p>What is news, however, is that the domain industry that appeared to be a digital sea of tranquility with a unified direction, is about to\u00a0 be stirred into a <strong>Pacific ocean of disturbance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I expect the game of such &#8220;guerrilla marketing&#8221; to become stronger and bigger, particularly as more gTLDs get ICANN approval. The expansion of the domain name space is creating a<strong> multi-billion dollar market<\/strong>, far and beyond anything experienced by the average Joe Domainer.<\/p>\n<p>I am not bothered by the ad placed by Minds+Machines, nor scared about a supposed collapse of the dot .com.<\/p>\n<p>I am bothered, however, by the <a title=\"Main Street is like a carriage horse\" href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/main-street-is-like-a-carriage-horse\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>obsessive close-mindedness<\/strong><\/a> of those that refuse to see a change in reality, which incorporates the <a title=\"Brands: Can you spot the .com ?\" href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/business\/brands-can-you-spot-the-com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>single biggest domain expansion<\/strong><\/a> since the creation of the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Vincent broke the news of a Facebook ad by Minds+Machines on Twitter, the resulting reaction was 100% as expected.
