{"id":3809,"date":"2014-02-19T12:33:02","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T17:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=3809"},"modified":"2014-02-19T12:37:05","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T17:37:05","slug":"the-time-is-now-to-thrive-or-flatline-domain-investment-strategies-for-your-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/the-time-is-now-to-thrive-or-flatline-domain-investment-strategies-for-your-business\/","title":{"rendered":"The time is now, to thrive or flatline: Domain investment strategies for your business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t sugar-coat things, and I don&#8217;t plan to change the rules of engagement now.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t started exploring the <strong>repercussions<\/strong> of the new Internet name space expansion for your business, better <strong>find a quiet place to flatline.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t like that <strong>brutal<\/strong> image of your eventual business death? <strong>Then keep on reading.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, I covered a few points regarding <a title=\"Domain investor\u2019s guide to gTLDs\" href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/domain-investors-guide-to-gtlds\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>the strategic approach to gTLDs.<\/strong><\/a> If my article wasn&#8217;t clear enough, allow me to repeat an important point:<\/p>\n<p>You won&#8217;t be able to register these domains ever again, if you wait until the general availability.<\/p>\n<p>The plan by <strong>Donuts, Inc.<\/strong> worked: a tiered landrush allows those that have more &#8216;<em>beef<\/em>&#8216; in a particular acquisition, to get the domain earlier, by paying more.<\/p>\n<p>While this does not sound &#8216;fair&#8217;, it is a smart business approach, both for the registry and the registrants: more money secures better assets, so those with less money to spend need to carefully plan their investments.<\/p>\n<p>When the crowds awake, long after general availability, the most important keywords for a particular gTLD will be gone.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not talking <a title=\"Domain investing strategies: Don\u2019t go all \u2018Pacman\u2019 with the new TLDs\" href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/domain-investing-strategies-dont-go-all-pacman-with-the-new-tlds\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>about registering everything in sight<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; just the key terms that along with the gTLD make the most sense for your business or investment.<\/p>\n<p>To better research your options, follow some of these methods that I utilize to improve my odds of securing prospective gTLDs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Repeat after me: I will not wait until general availability. The premium fee is an one time investment, that can be recouped for any gTLD that&#8217;s worth registering.<\/li>\n<li>Research the &#8220;keyword gTLD&#8221; results in Google. If it&#8217;s in the upper hundreds of thousands, great. If it&#8217;s in the millions, awesome.<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye at the USPTO for the &#8220;keyword gTLD&#8221; combo; it will be equally, or perhaps more important than any &#8220;keyword&#8221; trademark searches.<\/li>\n<li>Use <a href=\"http:\/\/ZFBot.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ZFBot.com<\/strong><\/a> to research existing domains: Use the begin field for the keyword and the ending field for the gTLD. Hey presto, instant data.<\/li>\n<li>Is the KeywordgTLD.com parked? Is it developed? Is it a small or a big business? All these questions determine your investment potential and eventual ROI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most important thing to remember: <strong>define your budget<\/strong> and don&#8217;t exceed it by more than 10%.<\/p>\n<p>As with every investment, <strong>the risk to reward quotient <\/strong>determines the overall potential for your business success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t sugar-coat things, and I don&#8217;t plan to change the rules of engagement now.
