{"id":3863,"date":"2014-03-01T22:01:56","date_gmt":"2014-03-02T03:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=3863"},"modified":"2014-03-01T22:10:06","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T03:10:06","slug":"snapnames-under-web-com-management-what-will-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/snapnames-under-web-com-management-what-will-change\/","title":{"rendered":"SnapNames under Web.com management: What will change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Web.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Web.com<\/strong><\/a> is a technology incubator based in Jacksonville, Florida &#8211; a city with a huge sprawl and a lively metro, that I enjoyed living in.<\/p>\n<p>As a personal parenthesis, I&#8217;ve great memories from Jax, some of which I shared in this <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/namejet-as-a-trojan-horse-the-sacking-of-four-valuable-domains-while-paying-for-only-one\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>documentary about stolen domain names<\/strong><\/a>; at some point, I even owned JAX.net, which I sold at a healthy profit.<\/p>\n<p>Back to Web.com &#8211; their acquisition of <a href=\"http:\/\/snapnames.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SnapNames<\/strong><\/a> from the <strong>Key Drive<\/strong> group is a welcome addition of a familiar brand to the Web.com family of brands, that includes <strong>Network Solutions<\/strong> and <strong>Register.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By acquiring SnapNames, Web.com has the opportunity to vastly improve the following key elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rebuild the drop-catching core service, by utilizing updated technology and a solid cluster of registrars<\/li>\n<li>Improve and strengthen the brand by rebooting its image and appeal; SnapNames will be then spun off as a stand-alone product<\/li>\n<li>Resolve and eliminate issues related to customer service, something that plagued SnapNames under its short-lived prior ownership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this point, the acquisition will effectively return ownership of the company to US soil from its Luxemburg-based owners, and possibly will lead to the retention of its US-based personnel only.<\/p>\n<p>A full announcement on Monday will detail the acquisition&#8217;s particulars, including the potential disclosure of stats and figures.<\/p>\n<p>SnapNames managed to make it through the <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/im-taking-the-snapnames-rebate-and-heres-why\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&#8220;Hank Alvarez&#8221; scandal of 2009<\/strong><\/a>, and was sold by Oversee to Key Drive as a &#8220;hot potato&#8221;; the service continued to provide domain investors with an alternative to Pool and other secondary drop-catchers.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Web.com is expected to provide <strong>technological and financial support<\/strong>, while maintaining SnapNames as an independent division and brand.
