{"id":4389,"date":"2015-01-22T09:03:40","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T14:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=4389"},"modified":"2015-01-22T09:03:40","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T14:03:40","slug":"never-set-bin-price-domain-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/never-set-bin-price-domain-names\/","title":{"rendered":"Never set a BIN price for your domain names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Selling your domain names on a venue with a fixed, &#8220;BIN&#8221; price opens up a can of worms.<\/p>\n<p>Not only you&#8217;re disclosing the price to the public, particularly on Sedo, but you&#8217;re also risking getting much less money that what the domain might be worth.<\/p>\n<p>Setting a BIN price supposedly generates more sales that close quicker, as the buyer knows in advance how much they have to &#8216;pony up&#8217; for the domain name. They can also make a usually irreversible decision on the spur of the moment, buying the domain with one click. I know, because I&#8217;ve done that, but the amount involved was within my budget.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is with the buyer that has a large or even &#8216;unlimited&#8217; budget, large corporations that need a particular domain name to roll out a product or service. Such buyers will gladly pay less, as opposed to more money, but in the process the seller loses out a substantial advantage they might have; that, of negotiation.<\/p>\n<p>In a case that is as fresh as yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/domaingang.com\/domain-news\/microsoft-acquired-hololens-dot-com-new-product-using-middleman\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Microsoft rolled out HoloLens<\/strong><\/a>, a revolutionary pair of goggles that will transform the way we interact with computers. They acquired the domain HoloLens.com using a third party &#8220;proxy&#8221; service, Marksmen. Nothing wrong with that, except they bought the domain on the spot as the seller was offering it for $6,750 at Sedo.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed for time to roll out a product, a company will most likely negotiate up versus down. This is not &#8216;extortion&#8217;, it&#8217;s the ability to sell a domain based on its demand characteristics, and in this case the buyer &#8211; Microsoft &#8211; would have not blinked twice at a price of $150,000 or perhaps more.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why setting a BIN price for your domains is not something I&#8217;d advise you to do, unless you&#8217;re 100% content with the money you&#8217;d receive.<\/p>\n<p>On another note, it seems that <a title=\"Domainer spamming: \u201cEveryone is doing it\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/domainer-spamming-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>serial spammer \/ &#8220;domain broker&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> that uses fake gmail profiles to spam dictionary domain owners is at it again. Waiting for them to slip up as they did before.
