I had an interesting discussion with an experienced domain investor the other day; among the things we talked about, was domain sales venues.<\/p>\n
He’s mostly a seller, so his buying habits are instinctive. One of the observations he made, was that when a domain name is listed for sale on Domain Name Sales, he rarely inquires about it.<\/p>\n
His rationale: DNS is mostly used by domain investors and resellers, and therefore their asking prices are considerably higher than domains listed on other venues.<\/p>\n
Recently, Sedo stated that their median domain sale price is $580 dollars.<\/p>\n
The GoDaddy marketplace is by far the “cheapest” when it comes to buying domain names. Afternic attracts many portfolios that are brokered, and thus pricing is higher to include the broker’s commission.<\/p>\n
Flippa offers a wide range of options, and sellers are basing their numbers on a variety of active metrics, such as traffic and revenue.<\/p>\n
In all, it appears that where one lists their domain name for sale does make a difference to the educated buyer.<\/p>\n
Being aware of a seller’s expectations of price is not necessarily a bad thing, as it cuts down on the ‘white noise’ associated with lowball offers. Personally, I simply delete offers that are outlandishly low.<\/p>\n
Domain investors want to maximize their money’s worth, and naturally observe the pricing structure of most active domain selling venues. As a buyer, an obvious solution is to contact the seller directly from their WHOIS info; while this approach is not necessarily better, it’s an alternative.<\/p>\n
