{"id":4593,"date":"2015-05-16T18:09:41","date_gmt":"2015-05-16T22:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=4593"},"modified":"2015-05-16T18:15:57","modified_gmt":"2015-05-16T22:15:57","slug":"flippa-and-the-ever-shifting-domain-bin-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/flippa-and-the-ever-shifting-domain-bin-price\/","title":{"rendered":"Flippa and the ever-shifting domain BIN price"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, I noted how most active domain auction venues lack <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domains\/namejet-flippa-and-sedo-one-necessary-improvement-in-common\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>one thing in common:<\/strong><\/a> the ability to display the annual cost for renewing the domain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kevin Fink<\/strong> was the only one that contacted me privately on the matter, to assure me that Flippa takes notice and many improvements are slated ahead.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s great news, particularly since I&#8217;ve now added one more item on Kevin&#8217;s list, the issue of the <strong>ever-shifting BIN price<\/strong> at Flippa auctions.<\/p>\n<p>Last week I was bidding on an exceptionally good domain on Flippa; with 15-20 minutes left until the end of the auction, I was the high bidder, with another person actively inching up.<\/p>\n<p>I was prepared to bid higher and held on, witnessing a delay in the other bidder&#8217;s counter-bids. Despite of the quality of the domain, the BIN was borderline &#8220;end user&#8221; price and the seller had already come down from five figures.<\/p>\n<p>In the last comment left by the seller, he had explicitly asked the buyers to take advantage of the particular BIN or bid aggressively.<\/p>\n<p>With minutes left until the end of the auction, I received a notification that it had ended, after someone used the BIN. To my astonishment, the BIN price had been lowered substantially, within range of my placed top bid.<\/p>\n<p>There was no notification of the BIN drop, thus eliminating me from the auction.<\/p>\n<p>It was a clear indication that there was a private arrangement between the seller and the buyer, to end the auction and sell the domain. For this type of <strong>unprofessional<\/strong> behavior, I wasn&#8217;t prepared, and questioned the legality of the process.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Fink confirmed that <em>&#8216;unfortunately, this is permitted&#8217;<\/em> and they are looking into improving the process.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the particular part of the process needs to be changed, as bidders can waste time and wait for the auction&#8217;s end, all while some slick dude will go behind their backs and arrange for the auction to end via the lowering of the BIN.<\/p>\n<p>One way to change the process, would be to disable BIN changes in the<strong> final 24 hours<\/strong> of the auction, at minimum &#8211; if not completely for auctions that have received bids. This way, the gaming of auctions would not occur, thus saving the rest of us the frustration.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I am not going to bid again at Flippa on auctions that have a BIN which can be altered at any time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, I noted how most active domain auction venues lack one thing in common: the ability to display the annual cost for renewing the domain.
