{"id":4887,"date":"2015-10-26T12:24:39","date_gmt":"2015-10-26T16:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=4887"},"modified":"2015-10-26T12:25:10","modified_gmt":"2015-10-26T16:25:10","slug":"icann-needs-to-control-gtld-domain-registries-that-spam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/icann-needs-to-control-gtld-domain-registries-that-spam\/","title":{"rendered":"ICANN needs to control gTLD domain Registries that spam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ICANN has been making a nice $185,000 dollars from every gTLD applicant, and the gift keeps on giving every year thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>I expressed my support for the <strong>expansion of the Internet namespace<\/strong>, ever since it went into effect, believing in meaningful <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/how-the-use-of-a-gtld-domain-saved-a-marketing-director-money-and-frustration\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>keyword+gTLD<\/strong><\/a> pairs that offer a great service to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, <strong>I detest spam<\/strong>, particularly when it&#8217;s clear that it targets me without any reason whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>.GDN Registry<\/strong> is based in Dubai, and caught my attention with their <a href=\"http:\/\/domaingang.com\/domain-news\/dot-gdn-about-to-launch-with-fear-mongering-email-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>fear-mongering campaign<\/strong><\/a> for a gTLD I have <strong>absolutely no use for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several weeks later, these idiots and their marketing &#8220;genius&#8221; flooded my mailbox with more than two dozen email copies.<\/p>\n<p>They emailed WHOIS-protected emails at Uniregistry, most likely using the <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/uniregistry-sequential-whois-shield-emails-attract-unscrupulous-spammers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>serial number flaw<\/strong><\/a> I&#8217;ve reported in the past.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4888\" src=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dot-gdn-spam.jpg\" alt=\"dot-gdn-spam\" width=\"680\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dot-gdn-spam.jpg 680w, https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dot-gdn-spam-300x271.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As far as I know, the dot .GDN Registry is the only one that has reached out to domain owners in such a brazen attempt to sell its warez.<\/p>\n<p>Not only I don&#8217;t have any interest in registering dot .GDN domains, but I would love to see ICANN <strong>slap the GDN Registry with a heavy fine<\/strong>, and a potential freezing of their gTLD until they cease and desist from sending out spam.<\/p>\n<p>Domain owners do not have to opt out from such unsolicited email campaigns, and gTLD Registries should not be exempt from following the professional rules of engagement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ICANN has been making a nice $185,000 dollars from every gTLD applicant, and the gift keeps on giving every year thereafter.
