{"id":5418,"date":"2017-08-15T17:31:38","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T21:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/?p=5418"},"modified":"2017-12-04T23:49:57","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T04:49:57","slug":"domain-registrars-one-more-thing-enom-does-backwards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/domain-registrars-one-more-thing-enom-does-backwards\/","title":{"rendered":"Domain registrars : One more thing eNom does backwards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;m <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/network-solutions-going-against-the-grain-of-ux-norm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>bidding farewell to the old school registrars<\/strong><\/a> that I patronized over the years, I can&#8217;t but notice their pitfalls.<\/p>\n<p>Switching over to a modern domain management system, such as that offered by <a href=\"http:\/\/Uniregistry.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Uniregistry<\/strong><\/a>, is the <a href=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/fabulous-com-dns-changes-remain-after-expired-domains-get-renewed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>culmination of frustration<\/strong><\/a>, wasted time, and often money, as experienced at other registars.<\/p>\n<p>Moving domains out of <strong>eNom<\/strong> is relatively easy, although they do take their sweet time to prolong the transfer for the full 5 days, as if I&#8217;d change my mind in the meantime.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of transfers failed with a system message recently, I discovered that eNom does one more thing backwards, unlike many other registrars: the default action to WHOIS changes is to <strong>lock the domain for 60 days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While other registrars implemented this new requirement by ICANN to be the &#8220;opt in&#8221; option, eNom takes the &#8220;opt out&#8221; approach and checks the box by default, as seen in the picture below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5419\" src=\"http:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/enom-transfer-lock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"909\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/enom-transfer-lock.jpg 909w, https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/enom-transfer-lock-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/acro.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/enom-transfer-lock-768x389.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 909px) 100vw, 909px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The box that says &#8220;Enable 60-day transfer lock when domain contact info is updated&#8221; must be checked off, and settings saved, before proceeding with any WHOIS contact updates that&#8217;d endanger transfers to another registrar.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, domain registrars should realize that customers are not retained by force or by dirty little tricks and omissions to disclose how the process works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;m bidding farewell to the old school registrars that I patronized over the years, I can&#8217;t but notice their pitfalls.
