Register.com needs to get on with the times

I’ve only used Register.com twice; once with a domain I bought from BuyDomains, and another time for a domain I won at NameJet; Register.com sells part of its expired inventory there.

Today I received the usual ICANN notification email from Register.com, for ensuring the contact info is valid, yadda yadda. To my surprise, I realized a single domain was still left there since July.

Time to move it out, I thought, and thus I unlocked it, then went to get the authentication code.

Register.com made me confirm my outgoing request three times, and finally I was greeted with a message that they would examine my request and let me know in 4 to 5 business days.

Seriously, get on with the times, Register.com. This is the 2010’s and we survived the Mayan end of times. It’s unacceptable to make me jump through ridiculous hoops, citing pseudo-security reasons, just to get my asset out of your digital cave.

I’m pretty sure that I will have to call them in 5 days, to spend more time for a task that normally takes 30 seconds to complete.

  1. It just isn’t nice. It’s one thing to put up with their aggressive marketing, but it’s another not to be reliable and responsive…

Thanks for letting us know. It matters.

  2. Uzoma – I went through the same process (had to call in after 5 days passed and my request was turned down) with the first domain a few years back. I didn’t know they’re still using paleolithic processes with the auth codes.

  3. Not to mention they still have 1999 prices. At a whopping $38 for a new .com, they aren’t exactly what you’d call a competitive alternative to GoDaddy.

  4. Joe – Both Network Solutions and Register.com have the same pricing, as they are both owned by Web.com

  5. I called them to turn off auto-renew on the 2 names I have with them (You can’t do it by yourself, you have to call them for “security reasons”) and the women said there would be “at least” a 1 hour wait to speak to that department. What to do? I cancelled the credit card I have on file with them so at least I won’t be billed $78 dollars.

  6. Acro,

I took the Godaddy coupon from Groupon, how do I redeem it again? I don’t see any codes, just a PRINT it option

    Thanks

    register.com is terrible

I lost my domain, it was unable to renew (always fail to renew) and it also unable to transfer.
they never provide good response to all my ticket.
Terrible service, terrible customer support, terrible price

think 1000 times before you use register.com service
It’s really suck how they steal my domain.
