The .CO landrush clocks a year in existence next week and it seems that if you haven’t renewed your .CO domains yet, you might be having a bit of a problem.
Some registrars charge an arm and a leg for renewals, while others offer coupons and discounts.
After buying a .CO domain earlier today I tried to transfer it to GoDaddy.
The domain was unlocked with “OK” status, the transfer was initiated with the proper authorization code and then GoDaddy sent me an email that the transfer had failed, with the message: The registry rejected the transfer request due to an ineligible domain status.
It seems that .CO domains can’t be transferred to another registrar if there are less than 5 days left until expiration.
So I ended up renewing it at the current registrar, Namecheap, which turned out to be a whole $6 less than GoDaddy’s regular price!
If it were true that you can’t transfer .CO within five days of expiry I think someone should start a class-action lawsuit against the master registrar of .CO
I had the same problem BTW, trying to transfer from Directnic to godaddy.
Any lawyers around here? Let’s figure it out and if its true let’s hit them hard!
Hey Acro,
Actually, I had some .CO domains at Domain Monster and I’ve initiated transfer to GoDaddy about 8 days before expiration.
I’ve unlocked and filled in the proper auth codes but it also failed.
Upon asking DM about it, they came saying the new registrar will have to contact Neustar (.CO Registry) directly to do an override for reasons I don’t know why.
GD then comes back with a reply saying the .CO domains I still had 60day lock and the type of lock in place is non-negotiable per ICANN.
Weird.
Anyway, I’m settling with DM, renewing domains for $20, which is actually cheaper by 0.99 with GoDaddy provided with a 30% coupon.
DomainMonster doesn’t even send the transfer emails once you initiate a transfer w/ EPP and unlock.
Think all domains have a transfer lock of 5 days before expiry, including .com, not a .co exclusive.
Acro, you buying .co? Care to share why?
