When the buyer’s ego gets in the way

Not every domain inquiry is perfect, and sometimes the other party’s ego – if it’s overly inflated – can hurt or ruin a potential sale.

Inquiries that attempt to shroud themselves in a mysterious vapor of unspecified intentions, call for extensive, careful research by the domain’s owner.

The exchange, via the relative anonymity of emails, can provide hints of the buyer’s overall intentions, and for the most part, indicate its outcome.

In a similar fashion, just because the other party is open about who they are from the get-go, there is no warranty that they will remain honest and upfront all the way.

A seller’s job is to maximize their return on investment. That magic ROI multiple is the only way to gauge success in the domain industry; flipping domains is a hobbyist’s approach, and it might work as a financial side dish for some.

A careful engagement with the party interested in your domain does not mean war. Even when the potential buyer attempts to downgrade the quality, value or question the asking price of your domain, one should remain bullet-proof and composed.

On several occasions, buyers start off in a decent manner, only to allow themselves become explosive, unprofessional and downright annoying.

The best approach, in this case, is not to engage in an ego clash, but to decide whether that inquiry is worth your time and energy invested. You have several options, and here are a few:

  • You can terminate the exchange, stating you are not interested in continuing the communication. Make sure you don’t respond to any more provocations after that is stated.
  • You can pass on the sale to a domain broker, who might interface with the other party in a different manner.
  • Alternatively, you can use reverse psychology: Ask the other party to explain if they would be willing to dispose of a valuable asset of their own, at a price they don’t agree to.

The bottom line is, it’s your domain name, and you set the price. Like a home in a prime location, that home and location can only be sold once.
