I get these offers all the time: domain inquiries from anonymous buyers on Sedo.
They don’t necessarily start low but upon my counter-offer they seem to forget that despite a cover of anonymity one needs to maintain their objectivity, common sense and reason.
Some offers can be outright ignorant, such as this fella who upon seeing my counter-offer decided to declare that he’s in fact better off to register a lengthier, composite .com instead of the matching keyword .org
I don’t get worked up by lengthy justifications and “sour grapes” approach by anonymous, so I simply cancel the transaction at that point.
I’m left, however, with one question: if that person feels justified to go register an alternate domain, then why bother contact me in the first place? Does he think I will care more about his thoughts just because he shared them with me? Does he want to intimidate me from behind the veil of anonymity?
The truth is, that there are plenty of ignorant domainers or end-users out there, who believe that anonymity is a surefire method to achieve better pricing. One, however, cannot achieve this by degrading the value of the very domain they are trying to get, in the face of its owner.
I confessed I am the most ignorance person when comes to domains. So I don’t make any offers because I simply don’t know how to resell the name for a higher price or how to build website to make enough money to justify the cost.
But I am not shy at pricing the domain names that I already have. I am not afraid of over pricing or under price and leave money on the table. Most lightly all my domain names are over priced. But if you want CosmeticSurgeons.CO you better have pile of cash. It is my name I can give it to my friend for free, but it will cost you $1.5 million. Thank you very much.
Now you know why I am a poor uncle. 🙂
Keep in mind that many individuals outside the domaining community despise the practice of registering domains for resale at “exorbitant prices” which can mean anything over $50. Personally I believe an exact-match one or two-word domain in an alt TLD could make for a stronger brand than a three or four-word “brandable” .COM. Many domainers disagree and believe anything other than .COM is worthless.
I agree, Acro…
Whats the point, I wonder?
Essentially, these people are either very stupid – or, disengenuous. Sadly, you can’t legislate for silliness (viz poor uncle’s post above!).
Also, I’m sick of people using Sedo to make $100 offers for $xxx, xxx domains…
