Network Solutions: a well-oiled machine

As a human being I make mistakes, although on some days I do feel at the superhuman level, depending on the amount of caffeine intake.

A recent mistake cost me an unheard of domain renewal fee of $37.99 – yes, it was for a .com – and a nice reinstatement fee of $25.99

I paid for it nonchalantly, because there was no way I’d let that 1999 domain in the hands of Network Solutions.

I must admit, that the original registrar runs a well-oiled machine. Their notification emails arrived every so often, to remind me of a pending expiration for a domain.

The problem was, that there were two domains about to expire in my account; one of which I didn’t care about. So I erroneously believed that the notifications – which I skimmed rather hastily these busy days – were for the other one.

Long story short, I paid the $63.98 and proceeded with materializing my promise not to let that happen again: by moving the domain immediately away from Network Solutions.

In the process of doing so, I received three painful emails from Network Solutions, informing me that perhaps I had made a mistake, maybe I wanted to stay and take advantage of their options, and other such tear-jerking stuff.

Perhaps they need to adjust their pricing in order to keep customers; in the year 2012, paying $38 for a .com is preposterous.

Happy holidays, and good riddance.

  1. NetSol and the just as evil Register.com are the worse registrars to entrust your domains with. There is no reprieve period with these fudge phuckers. As soon as the domain expires, you can be sure they’ll be demanding a “reinstatement” fee on top of their normally high renewal prices.

  2. I don’t know how anyone could pay over $10.00 to register an available .com in this day and age. The most I paid was $35/year back in 2000 with Register.com

  3. SaggyNickels – Correct, there is no leniency, not even for a day. I admit that it was my fault to leave the domain there in the first place; it was an acquisition from a NameJet winner.

Domains – You’d be surprised how many companies do. I tried to convince a buyer to transfer the domain to GoDaddy instead of NetSol; their response was that to a company $10 or $40 makes no difference. Valid argument, if it’s just a single domain to manage.

  4. I have had similar experiences with Network Solutions as well. Transferred everything away from them a few years ago. Then when I acquired a portfolio there, transferred out at renewal time, since their renewals were way above market rate (double or triple if I recall correctly), and they would not do a bulk discount. A lot of work to transfer, but worth it. Their follow up emails are baloney, given the way they treated you while you were a customer.

  5. Had a same problem with NetSol… Greedy bastards!

  6. The fact that I cannot auto renew domains without paying the full $35 annual registration fee is not good. They flipped them to auto renew once without my approval and I had a several hundred dollar charge to be reversed on my card. So, I have to call in and speak to a representative, who tries to sell marketing services or other services that I don’t want, in order to get my “Gold VIP” price. Since I am forced to call it is not convenient. Now tonight I find out the expiration is based on Eastern Time. This is a really bad policy when it means Network Solutions will now insist on charging a reinstatement fee for several domains I called in to renew because of time zone differences. I have been a Netsol customer for 20 years and sadly today they are losing my business because of a really poor policy. This reinstatement policy screams to customers that they don’t care if we register names with them any longer. I will not pay this fee. I will let the domains expire – or try to transfer if I can. I will go away as an very unhappy customer. The only way I can demonstrate my frustration is to take my business elsewhere. So much for 20 years of loyalty. I will now start the process of transferring all my other domains to another registrar. Farewell Netsol!
