Having registered or acquired the majority of my domain portfolio between 2001 and 2006, I often review my attempts to sell these domains at forums, back in the day.
I went after dictionary keywords early on, using the services of DomainsBot – not the same company as today.
Time and again, that investment has proven how much intuition is important; my current sales for thousands of dollars for domains I paid reg fee or low $xxx to acquire, are made to end users, using Domain Name Sales and Escrow.com.
This combo has been a true blessing; as a decade old customer of Escrow.com I have nothing but positive things to report.
Obviously, not every domain can be resold to a domainer, so I don’t blame those who didn’t spend $100 – $200 to buy my domains on forums, back in the day. Their lack of foresight and my persistence with holding long, is now paying off handsomely; end user buyers now fork out a minimum of $3,000 for each of those.
In essence, I am now mostly a buyer at domain forums, as I scoop up bargains and I’m capable of turning these $xx acquisitions into large or even larger sales. It’s just a matter of being selective and having a clear perception about a domain’s potential. Intuition is gained with time and it has been an exceptional experience over the years.
To recap: There are great deals out there, and while we can’t turn back the clock to hand-register good quality keyword domains, holding long is the best way for a sizable return on investment on your domain acquisitions.
Good points, Theo.
I am glad that people didn’t buy all my domains back in 2003-2005.
