Don’t be afraid of the blank sheets : The fear of the blank canvas

A blank sheet of paper, or an empty screen can be very intimidating to an artist or any creative person.

Its emptiness is something unsettling and lacking direction.

This initial fear of the empty canvas can become chronic, leading to the much dreaded writer’s block.

To overcome this temporary impasse, a creative person needs to define a rough framework that is often non-specific and generic in its structure and qualities.

Once there, they can change the outlines, create the inner folds, and generate the content that they could not imagine or distinguish at the beginning.

A great video covering this creative process, is from TEDxAthens in 2009; Ricky Nierva, who joined Pixar in 1997, talks about how to overcome the fear of the empty canvas in this great video.

If you feel that your Monday – or any day – has reached a wall, spend 17 minutes watching this video.
