Time stamps for domain services should be localized

A pet peeve I have with online domain venues, such as domain auction web sites or registrars, is the timestamp of various events.

Since I am required to have an active profile with such venues, adding an extra field related to my timezone should not be considered a luxury.

That extra information, would allow the display of timestamps, in a format matching my current time zone.

For example, instead of mentally adding 3 hours for any time-related event displayed on NameJet or Escrow.com, I would view that information instantly. Ideally, the view should display both the remote time, and my local time for that event, offset by my timezone. And because us designers are visual, I would love to see those two times displayed in different, contrasting colors.

Finally, such a timezeone field should be editable, as traveling around the world changes one’s timezone, naturally. It would be a great upgrade to how I manage my bids and other information.

TGIF!

  1. It is easy to get the IP and adjust the time accordingly.

  2. Kosta – That too, but it’s not foolproof and it’d require active querying and maintenance of a geolocation database. If it’s simply a field in one’s profile, that can be updated as often as desired, I’m good with that. 😀

  3. Theo a time stamp would be especially good when the Daylight Saving Time kicks in in the US and has not yet started in other countries. I get confused for weeks before we get back in sync.

Agreed. You shouldn’t have to do math, or find a workaround, just to figure out how much time you have left, or when a particular event happened.

  5. It used to be in sync until they stretched it adding two weeks at the beginning and the end.

  6. Nadia 🙂 To be fair, NameJet has the countdown as well. But I’d like to see, for example, the timestamp for bids in my local timezone. The same for Escrow.com events during a transaction. No major complaints, this is – as I said – a pet peeve.
