Bido: Double-dipping the domain auctions

Imagine bidding on an item on eBay and winning it, only to be told that it was sold on Craigslist. Essentially, you’re disclosing your bidding intentions to an unscrupulous seller that does not honor the policies of auction venues.

This is the type of unethical behavior that ticks me off fully, and today I witnessed just that with a domain on auction at Bido.com

With only a few minutes of bidding left and the domain in the low hundreds, I decided to do the obvious: type in the URL. Lo and behold, the GoDaddy parking page came up, showing that it’s listed for sale on GoDaddy auctions until the end of the month.

Naturally, I honor my bids, but at this point I wished someone else took over the burden of dealing with a complicated situation, where the seller would still be tempted to accept higher offers made on TDNAM until the end of the month, and the new owner having to potentially wait it out until then.

To my relief, some poor soul bid $50 more and the auction appears to have ended. At this point, I won’t disclose the domain, as I’m waiting to see if its ownership changes right away. Bido should really require that all its domainĀ  listings come clean of any other pending obligations.

  1. Do you think it could a zombie listing on Godaddy? I’ve had names I’ve bought from people and still laugh about the names still listed for sale in various venues.

  2. I don’t know, but it might not be what you think.

Sometimes, I forget to change name servers and leave my newly purchased names pointing to GoDaddy. Weeks later, when I type in the name, I’m shocked not only to see that it goes to a GoDaddy landing page but that sometimes there is a notice that the name is up for auction. (This happened to me just this afternoon.)

I’ve never put a name up for auction at GoDaddy, but I assume I must’ve clicked something on the site at some point that inadvertently authorized this. I’ve never bothered to look into it. I always just change the name servers and forget about it. Probably stupid of me.

  3. John – No, because the domain is listed on GoDaddy and Bido with the same BIN.

  4. Ahhh, “I see” said the blind man!

    Good point.
