Chasing that “Dream Domain”: Define your budget accordingly

On a daily basis, I peruse domain forum posts from other domainers, requesting the submission of domains.

Some are outright hilarious, in the sense that they are seeking “dream domains” for a budget not to exceed $99.

That $XX reference is an indication that one’s “dream domain” exists only in the sphere of fantasy, a remnant of the distant past when good domains could be hand-registered.

These days, as we all know, are long gone. If one needs a domain that is positive, short, aged, or brandable they better be prepared to fork out a couple of grand – minimum.

My advice to those who are looking for something that’d qualify as a “dream domain”: create it yourself, even if you have to spend some time on the drawing board.

When it comes to launching a new product, service or otherwise a brick-and-mortar company, your options are simple: either have the budget for that perfect domain name, or invent it, for a minimal reg-fee budget.

You can’t have it both ways.

  1. Agree, it’s quite ironic to read such posts on domain forums where people look for “dream domains” with limited budget $XX

  2. It is still possible to get choice domains on the cheap. I’ve successfully backordered highly desirable domains for less than $99. How do I know they are desirable? Because within days of the domain coming under my ownership, the unsolicited offers come in.

On the other hand, I’ve also spent tens of thousands acquiring high tier domains from private sellers. Sometimes, the seller needs to liquidate quickly which plays in my favor as I’ve gotten some gems with valuations in low to mid six figures for under $10K.

And then there are the few domains that are “heirlooms” to be passed on to my heirs. Those I wouldn’t sell for any price.

Enjoyed your articles but you’re wrong on this one and I can prove it.

  3. “You are wrong” – Sorry, but you are wrong 😀 Could not resist that.

The issue at hand is not to buy domains “on the cheap”. It’s about buying that single best domain that you “dream of” for your business. That, cannot be done when being offered $99 domains, or even when you have to go through a “heirloom” of random pigeon sh*t to find the diamond that the bird ate.

  4. Believe it or not, but I have in my possession an assortment of “dreamy” domains gotten for a few hundred bucks or less. I’m talking HEIRLOOMS!

  5. Not Romney/You are wrong – Let’s see them then, those heirlooms deserve the public’s appreciation! 😀

  6. Actually, the heirlooms are in my pants. *cha-ching* OUCH!

Seriously, I would say my portfolio includes a handful that I am a liberty not to reveal due to their high value. Since they are “priceless” there is no sense in letting people know that you own them. A couple of them are “geo” related.
