Enom no more

Using eNom as a registrar these days is a leftover from around 2002; that’s when I acquired a reseller account and managed to keep my domain renewal costs low.

An incident that occurred on Sunday made me change my strategy with regards to eNom; instead of keeping my remaining domains there – mostly TLDs that Fabulous.com won’t handle – I am moving them all out immediately.

Why the sudden change of heart?

Earlier yesterday my email stopped working and my web site at Acroplex.com displayed the notorious eNom chick page instead.

Initially I thought it’s an issue with my account but since my domain is with Fabulous I soon realized that the issue was related to the domain used by my web host to manage DNS.

Just 8 hours past its expiration date, the domain was already being pointed by eNom to their notorious “backpack chick” – that’s the phrase they used when I called support to inquire how this could be fixed in a manner matching the status of a self-professed leader in domain registrations.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to renew the domain of my host – even though I’ve displayed similar generosity in the past – and the eNom support would not switch the DNS back temporarily for – say – 24 hours until my host renewed their domain. They were very pedantic, of course, teaching me a “lesson” about how people or businesses should be careful with their domain renewals and how contact email should not be on a domain that can be allowed to lapse.

The bottom line: my host responded to my ticket in less than an hour, they renewed the domain apologizing profusely; in fact, I never have had any problems with them in several years. It was one of those human errors that can happen to everyone.

I definitely didn’t like eNom’s lack of flexibility, particularly to an old customer. I am packing all my stuff inside the eNom chick’s backpack and moving the remaining domains to Name.com

  1. Acro,
I like Fabulous.com too but what if we lose a name in the UDRP. Where do you sue?

  2. Me – you sue where the Registry is based. That’d be in the US for com/net/org

  3. I had an issue with ENOM several months ago which irritated me as well. You may recall the premium .TV release from March 2010. There was one name I liked but it was priced quite a bit higher than I wanted to pay. Given the massive number of registrations on the 18th and 19th I was kind of surprised noone had picked it up. Regardless I kept my eye on it and on that Saturday morning I was checking ENOM and noticed it was priced at $50. I jumped, regged the name and was tickled pink. I received an email for the charge to my credit card and the domain appeared in my account over the weekend. A couple days later I received an email stating oops we goofed – that domain was mispriced. Please pay the remaining $XXX if you would like to keep the domain. Otherwise, we will remove it from your account within X days if you don’t pay. I refused to pay the differential and subsequently the name was taken out of my account. Now if I buy an item at Best Buy or Macy’s at a bargain price and it turns out the pricing was an error, what would happen if the manager at Best Buy or Macy’s broke into my apartment and took back that item because they had mispriced the product? Hmm…

  4. Fear not Acro, word on the street is that when we launch Yexa.com we will be offering more tld’s than what is available at Fabulous.com. So keep an eye out for that. 😉

  5. And people harp about Godaddy so much. Enom has serious customer relations problems.

I can get most of this done in the Godaddy control panel and if the grace period hits I can call in and get a human to renew it. Godaddy lets you renew up until it expires from the grace period.

Enom I’ve heard horror stories from the beginning. I have never used Enom, the owner sounded scummy, the stories. For all the bad press about Godaddy, I am glad I am there.

  6. How’s the transfer out process going for you? I haven’t figured out how to get EPP codes form enom in bulk; it seems you have to do it one by one by one by one…

  7. Cool Mike – and IDN registration too?

  8. Mike – can’t wait.

Steve – there’s always the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back 😀

Andrew – there’s no bulk process, fortunately less than 100 domains left.

  9. @fizz – not sure if IDN’s have been discussed yet. I’ll take it to the table for you!

  10. @fizz – just heard back from the team and I’m told that IDN’s are definitely part of future Yexa.com plans.

  11. Thanks for the feedback, Mike.

  12. backpack girl is so hot

  13. That girl is so hot rofl 😛

Anyway why didn’t you move them to godaddy instead?

I hear many people ranting about Godaddy but i have no problem with them so far and i’ve got around 180 domains with them.
